Your September Financial Curriculum: Debt-Free by the Holidays
Here’s the truth nobody wants to say out loud in September: the holidays are coming. And if you don’t have a plan right now — today, this month — you will arrive at December doing exactly what you did last year. Charging things you can’t afford, telling yourself you’ll deal with it in January, and starting the new year deeper in debt than before.
Not this year.
September is your window. Three months before the holidays, with enough runway to actually make a dent in your debt, pad your savings, and build a holiday budget that doesn’t send you backward. This month we attack with everything we’ve got.
How This Works
- A core theme each week
- Daily action steps Monday through Friday
- A weekly challenge to keep you accountable
- An honest truth nobody usually says out loud
WEEK 1 (Sept 1–7): Assess and Accelerate
Theme: Where Are You Now and How Fast Can You Move?
The Honest Truth: Most people don’t know exactly how much debt they have or exactly what interest rate they’re paying on each account. They have a general sense. That general sense is costing them money. This week you’re going to get specific — because specific is where progress lives.
Daily Action Steps
Monday, Sept 1 — Full Debt Audit
Pull up every debt account. Write down the current balance, APR, and minimum payment for each one. Use the Debt Audit page (page 3) of your free Debt Freedom Bundle. If you haven’t updated it since June, update it today.
Tuesday, Sept 2 — Calculate Your Monthly Interest Drain
Add up the total interest you’re paying across all debts every month. That number is what you’re paying just to stand still. Let it fuel your urgency.
Wednesday, Sept 3 — Find $100 More Per Month
Look at your budget and find $100 you can redirect to debt this month. Cancel something. Cook at home more. Skip a non-essential purchase. $100 extra per month is $300 before the holidays — and that matters.
Thursday, Sept 4 — Set Your Holiday Budget Now
Yes, in September. Write down every person you plan to buy a gift for and a realistic dollar amount. Add it up. That’s your holiday budget. Now figure out how you’ll fund it — through savings, not credit cards.
Friday, Sept 5 — Open a Holiday Sinking Fund
Open a dedicated savings account or create a savings bucket labeled “Holidays 2026.” Start transferring to it now. Even $50/week for 12 weeks is $600 — enough to cover most modest holiday budgets without touching a single credit card.
Week 1 Challenge: The September Debt Sprint
Set a specific debt payoff target for September. Not “pay more” — “pay off $400 extra on my Capital One card.” Write it on a sticky note and put it somewhere visible. Come back at the end of the month and report back to yourself. Did you hit it?
WEEK 2 (Sept 8–14): Call, Negotiate, and Refinance
Theme: Work the System to Pay Less Interest
The Honest Truth: Most people pay whatever interest rate they were assigned and never question it. But interest rates are often negotiable — especially if you’ve been a good customer. One phone call can save you hundreds of dollars. Most people just never make it.
Daily Action Steps
Monday, Sept 8 — Call Your Highest-Rate Card
Call the number on the back of your highest-interest credit card and ask: “I’ve been a loyal customer and I’d like to request a lower interest rate.” Be polite, be direct. If they say no, ask when you can call back to request again. If they say yes, you just saved real money.
Tuesday, Sept 9 — Research Balance Transfer Options
If you’re carrying 20%+ APR balances, a 0% balance transfer card could give you 12–21 months to pay without interest. Read our guide on how to use balance transfers to pay off debt faster and decide if it makes sense for you.
Wednesday, Sept 10 — Look Into Personal Loan Refinancing
If you have multiple high-interest credit card debts, a personal loan at a lower rate can consolidate them into one manageable payment. Compare rates at Credible or NerdWallet. Don’t apply yet — just research your options.
Thursday, Sept 11 — Negotiate a Bill (Not Just Debt)
Call one service provider — your phone company, internet provider, insurance company — and ask for a better rate. Mention that you’re considering switching. You’ll be surprised how often they find a discount when you ask.
Friday, Sept 12 — Redirect Any Savings to Debt
Whatever you saved through negotiating this week — a lower rate, a reduced bill, a cancelled subscription — redirect every dollar of it to your highest-priority debt. Don’t absorb it back into spending.
Week 2 Challenge: Make 3 Calls This Week
Call your credit card company, your internet provider, and one other bill you pay regularly. Ask each one for a lower rate or a better deal. Keep a log of what you saved. Every dollar counts toward your debt-free before the holidays goal.
WEEK 3 (Sept 15–21): The Cash Surge
Theme: Generate Extra Money to Throw at Debt
The Honest Truth: Sometimes the fastest way to pay off debt isn’t to spend less — it’s to earn more. Even temporarily. A one-time surge of $500 thrown at a debt can knock months off your payoff timeline. This week is about finding that surge.
Daily Action Steps
Monday, Sept 15 — The Big Purge
Go room by room and pull out everything you haven’t used in 6+ months. Clothes, electronics, furniture, sports equipment, books, kitchen gadgets. Box it all up. You’re going to sell it this week.
Tuesday, Sept 16 — List Everything for Sale
Post every item from yesterday on Facebook Marketplace, eBay, Poshmark, or OfferUp. Price things to sell quickly — you want the cash, not to hold onto items. Direct every dollar earned straight to debt.
Wednesday, Sept 17 — Offer One Service This Week
Is there something you can do for someone this week for pay? Lawn care, babysitting, tutoring, cleaning, grocery runs for a neighbor, social media help for a local business? Put it out there. Even one job at $50–$100 matters.
Thursday, Sept 18 — Plan a No-Spend Rest of the Month
Commit to zero discretionary spending for the rest of September. Groceries, gas, and bills only. Every dollar you don’t spend is a dollar you can throw at debt. Even two weeks of this can free up $200–$400.
Friday, Sept 19 — Make Your Biggest Extra Payment Yet
Take everything you’ve generated this week — from selling, from not spending, from any extra income — and make one big extra payment on your target debt. Feel the momentum. This is what it looks like to be serious.
Week 3 Challenge: Generate $200 This Week
Sell things. Offer services. Skip every non-essential purchase. Your goal is to generate $200 this week from sources outside your regular paycheck and send it directly to debt. It’s aggressive — but you said you wanted to be debt-free before the holidays.
WEEK 4 (Sept 22–30): Protect Your Progress Going Into Q4
Theme: Build Your Defense Before the Holidays Hit
Daily Action Steps
Monday, Sept 22 — Review Your September Progress
How much extra did you pay toward debt this month? How much did your balance drop? How much did you save toward the holidays? Write it down. Celebrate the wins, acknowledge the gaps, and adjust for October.
Tuesday, Sept 23 — Finalize Your Holiday Budget
Revisit the holiday budget you drafted in Week 1. Adjust the numbers if needed. Add up the total. Now check your holiday sinking fund — are you on track? If not, what needs to change in October and November?
Wednesday, Sept 24 — Plan for Q4 Spending Pressure
Write down every upcoming expense between now and December 31: Halloween costumes or candy, Thanksgiving food, travel, gifts, holiday parties, year-end bills. Put a dollar amount next to each one. This is your Q4 spending map.
Thursday, Sept 25 — Set Your October Debt Goal
Based on your September progress, set a specific, achievable debt payoff goal for October. Push yourself — but keep it realistic. Write it down and put it somewhere you’ll see it on October 1.
Friday, Sept 26 — Commit to the No New Debt Holiday Pledge
Write this down and sign it: “This holiday season, I will not go into new debt. I will spend only what I have saved.” That pledge — taken seriously — is worth more than any financial tip we can give you.
Week 4 Challenge: The No New Debt Holiday Pledge
Share your holiday budget with one person this week — your partner, a friend, a family member. Tell them your number and your plan. External accountability before the holidays is one of the most powerful tools you have. Don’t skip this one.
